| weekly update |
[Aug. 7th, 2008|08:34 am] |
Gaming: No game this week. I was supposed to run, but the Hurricane That Wasn't scuttled our plans. Next week, we'll take another swing at Keep on the Shadowfell. In other news, I've been working on the next adventure. So far, it's been very easy. The guidelines made it cake for me to figure out encounters, allot treasure drops and do all the monster tweaking that I'll be doing. (I think there's only one encounter where I'm not changing a monster's level, abilities or appearance.)
Watching: Middleman continues to be totally charming, and it rewards geek trivia knowledge. I also like something the creator said on io9.com. "if [The Middleman] is anti-anything, it's anti- the idea that heroism is ultimately tragic, which I think is the dominating trope of most scifi shows that I watch, shows that I like and admire." (Thanks, Scav) I also got the first disc of Venture Brothers Vol 1 via netflix yesterday, so I'll be finally catching up on what the heck all my gaming pals are talking about. I'm also watching Angel Season 1 with Kat. We're skipping a lot of the early "we don't know what the heck we're doing" episodes, but now that Wesley's joined the cast, I think we'll probably watch every one.
Reading: Finished Voyage of the Mourning Dawn, an Eberron novel. It is really cool stuff and I can't wait to start the next one. Gaming fiction has gotten a lot better over the years. Heck, I'm not even sure what class a couple of the characters are. I also re-read my Astro City trade paperbacks and am working my way through PS238.
Writing: Notes continue to accumulate on my PC. Thoughts swirl in my head. Now if I can only plant my butt in the chair and write the darn thing. |

Building on the last blog post where I unveiled the title for the next ps238 trade, here's a few pdfs of some ps238 themed postcards (one, two, and three) that will be part of the final cover design! I went ahead and put a second "page" on each that has the required mailing blanks. I dunno if these are usable, but if anyone hits on a easy way to do so, feel free to share in the comments to this entry!
I travel to GenCon Indy next week, and soon after will be Dragoncon. I plan on being in Atlanta for at least two days, signing stuff and seeking autographs of my own. A few more of the Battlestar Galactica cast will be there that haven't signed my toaster, and I hope I can score Michael Dorn's sig on one of the "Star Trek: Generations" french fry boxes I've got floating around the office. If only someone from Doctor Who was there, I'd have my newly-arrived Dalek Voice-Changing Helmet scribbled on!
And for those thinking of getting one of the Dalek helmets, here's some vital info: There is no "back" to the toy, so large heads aren't too big a problem. However, glasses are. Not that you have perfect vision seeing out of the grillwork, but you'll need contacts if you normally wear specs. The voice changer is up to Dalek-izing any voice, and the lights on top of it flash along with your threats of extermination. If nothing else, it'll make a fine office decoration when not being used to make the nephews roll their eyes at me. :)
This may sound like an odd question, but does anyone out there know if one can preserve a potato? I know some vegetables can be "mummified," but potatoes don't do well over time without rotting or sprouting, correct? Even if treated with something? If one can make a real potato into a fossil, I think it'd be a hoot to get one signed by Sean Astin. I suppose there's always a box of "instant potatoes," but it's not the same...
Also, Joel Hodgson, Trace Belieu, and TV's Frank Coniff will be Dragoncon-bound. I'm not sure what to bring for them to sign, as I missed out on the "garage sale" that was held when they broke down the sets and sold off the props from the show. My best idea thus far tonight would be to hunt up one of the gumball machines they used to make Tom Servo's head; I believe "Mr. Bulky" carries them. I guess if I wanted something more geeky (yet with potato-like preservation problems), I could always bring some waffles.
But soft, what a href's through yonder HTML breaks?
- Dr. Horrible fans can download some "horrible" wallpaper in red and white. Much more is available on Cheyenne Wright's horrible blog, including wallpaper featuring the "Penny" character! - Those I showed this to had mixed feelings about a new film called Cthulhu. All I gotta say is the big guy himself better make an appearance, or I'm going to take my SAN and go home. - These are either going to be recieved as "incredibly funny" or "amazingly stupid." Beaming into the linkdump (with a NSFW language warning) is a collection of "Star Trek Voiceover" videos, starting with Ritardo, Lunch Trek, and Chin Hitler. More can be seen in the author's YouTube profile. - Fans of Stephen King will want to check out his new online story project, entitled 'N.' I still want my "Dark Tower" HBO series, darnit! - When next you are fighting the forces of evil and sustain a boo-boo (valiantly, of course), patch it up appropriately. And comicons should require these in the first aid station, too. - Final Ninja has some controls that take getting used to, but I get a very "Batman Beyond" vibe from this platformer. - If you didn't enjoy the previous Star Trek videos, perhaps this performance by 'DJ Spock' will be better recieved. - And here's a side-scrolling shooter that starts out simple but gets powered up and more difficult as you go: Alphabounty. |

mcroft and I were talking at dinner about True Lies, which I just can't stand because of the striptease scene. I always identify much more with the Jamie Lee Curtis character who's being blackmailed into fucking a stranger than I think the filmmakers intended. After all, it's all right to be forced to have sex with a stranger if it turns out to be your husband! Then it becomes sexy and not scary and humiliating!
It occurred to me in the middle of the discussion that this is why I enjoyed Jane's assassination scene in Mr. & Mrs. Smith so much: it took some of the scary humiliation prostitute factor of the True Lies scene and turned it on its head by making the hooker both a dominatrix and a deadly assassin. Of course, it's also Angelina Jolie in black leather, and who's going to argue with that? |

I'm doing nanoreamo again. How many books can you read in a month? I've got three full books (roughly 1150 pages) done. Not counting the ones I started in July. Goal is 5000 pages/12+ books.
(I should be hitting the 100 books for 2008 mark soon. Assuming I've kept track of them all.) |

| | exanimate | ] | Feeling a bit better now. Worked out ruffled feathers issue (misunderstanding on my part). May have finally figured out the problem with our internet here at the house (it looks like it was a bad DSL filter; fortunately, we've got tons of spares). Watched more of "Freakazoid" season one on DVD. It mostly holds up, and it's been interesting watching it work its way into C-Monster's subconscious.
Looks like we've got a quorum for Saturday's Champions, though there's still room for more, if anyone local's interested. |

| | envious | ] | Just caught the end of The Wiz on the Retro channel. I loved this movie when I was a kid, and listened to the soundtrack over and over. Man, when Lena Horne reprises "If You Believe" it is the best part of the movie for me. It still makes me tear up.
Back in high school I remember watching some old television variety show, when she came on and sang a few numbers. I was awestruck. I called a friend of mine on the phone (and it was after 10pm on a schoolnight!) and told her to tune into this show, because the most amazing voice I had ever heard was singing.
I should buy some of her stuff. Dayum. |

The boychild went to school to pick up his schedule. We were amused that in past years, when kids were bussed over to the junior high for algebra, the class was offered first period. Now that it is offered at the middle school, it's offered last period. Won't THAT be special? Actually, with D the way he is in the morning, this is probably a good thing.
Anyway, so we're there and his language arts teacher from last year nabs him in the hall. Says hey, you're an artist AND a writer... I want you on yearbook.
He is actually very interested, which does not surprise me. He is my son, which means he has my writerly genes. And he is a_h_scientist's son, which means he's incredibly artistic. And there isn't a newspaper for him to work for (I never did yearbook, but did do lots of newspaper stuff starting in middle school), so I guess this is the closest he can get.
This means we need to buy a yearbook this year. We haven't bought one for either kid til now because, well, we don't think there should BE yearbooks until high school. These first graders walking around with yearbooks? Silly, that is. I hate to encourage them, but then again, if my son is going to be working on it, I guess we need one.
*sigh* |

I am one of only 9 women in my company who have been selected to attend the SWE (Society of Women Engineers) conference in November. I have no idea who entered my name for consideration (and I have asked several people), but this is way freaking cool, and I owe someone here at work a debt of gratitude.
The conference is in Baltimore this November, and I expect it will be a great opportunity for networking, as well as a great learning experience. Yay me! |

Austin business: Apparently dead in the water. I think they are dreaming of someone who would be bursting with excitement to work for them without even seeing an offer. Good luck in this job market, guys. Much disappointment all around.
Computer business: Video card RMA'd. No idea how long it will take. Also: CPU cooler recommendation. I replaced the worthless Intel stock cooler with an ASUS Arctic Square. Attaches with a nice metal under-board bracket to the over-socket bracket with real metal screws, not those stupid plastic posts. Also, my CPU now idles at 25C. 35C while playing games.
T.S. Edouard: Epic Fail. Though I did stay home from work because work was all OH NOES BE SAFE, so sure, I'll work from home. Thanks Ed. |
